Firefly alumns Alan Tudyk and Nathan Fillion are once again aboard a spaceship, but this time, it's not Serenity (or a real spaceship, for that matter). The duo have teamed up for Con Man, a comedy web series created by Tudyk which satirizes comic book and sci-fi culture, with a possible autobiographical touch.
The Con Man trailer premiered on July 10 at Comic-Con in San Diego. Here is the official synopsis:
"Con Man centers around the post-show life of Wray Nerely (Alan Tudyk), the pilot and co-star of Spectrum, a sci-fi series which was cancelled before it's time and eventually became a cult classic beloved by fans. Wray's good friend, Jack Moore (Nathan Fillion), starred in the series and has gone on to become a major celebrity, while Wray continued to struggle to find his big break. While Jack enjoys the life of an A-lister, Wray tours the sci-fi circuit as a guest of conventions, comic book stores, and lots of pop culture events. The show will explore all the weird and crazy things that happen to Wray along the way, while telling the story of a guy learning to love and embrace his fans."
Sounds familiar, doesn't it? (Though it would be remiss to say that Tudyk's career post-Firefly was nowhere near as paltry as Wray's.)
So exactly how excited are fans for the return of Captain Mal and Hoban "Wash" Washburne? If their Indiegogo page is any indication, very: their crowdsourcing campaign for the show raised just shy of $3.2 million, overshooting their original goal of $425,000 by 735 percent. Instead of shooting only three originally intended epsidoes. Con Man now has a 12-episode order and a companion novel co-written by Tudyk and producer PJ Haarsma.
Confirmed Whedonite guest stars include Seth Green, Felicia Day, and Sean Maher, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn.
Con Man will premiere on Vimeo this September, and is available for preorder now.
