'Firefly' cast reunites for 'Firefly Online'

Browncoats the Verse over are shaking excitedly in their boots. At San Diego Comic-Con, it has been announced that the upcoming MMO game Firefly Online will reunite the nine actors that comprised the crew of heroes from the television show "Firefly" and the film "Serenity." According to a Facebook post, the actors will provides voices for their characters from the show, as well as some of them doing additional characters in the online game. About half of the actors have already recorded material and the other half will be doing so in the future. Actor Michael Fairman will also be reprising his role as crime-lord Niska.

Firefly Online is described as a strategic RPG. The game comes from publisher Quantum Mechanix and developer Spark Plug Games, with the "Firefly" name and characters licensed from Fox Digital Entertainment.

The first gameplay trailer for Firefly Online begins with the voice of Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Book in the show and film, and ends with Nathan Fillion, who played Captain Malcom Reynolds, sharing his thoughts on being a captain of a starship.

The trailer shows gun-fighting on a planet, flying a ship through space, exploring a frontier town, customizing your starship's exterior, furnishing the ships' rooms and creating an avatar to captain the ship.

The "Firefly" television series was created in 2002 by Joss Whedon, now known as the director of "The Avengers" film. The science-fiction western TV show built up a cult following after its cancellation by Fox, with high DVD sales, reaching as high as #1 on Amazon. This resulted in a surprise return to the setting and its colorful characters in 2005, with Whedon writing and directing a follow-up film titled "Serenity." This was released by Universal pictures, hence the name change, as Fox was not involved.

Beyond the "Serenity" film, the world has also lived on through several graphic novels, a book, two tabletop role-playing games and a board game with several expansions.

Firefly Online was originally scheduled to launch summer 2014, but according to the game's Facebook page the MMORPG will not launch until Spring 2015. The game will be released for Windows and Mac computers, as well as iOS and Android devices.
