Back in March, Sony released the 2.50 Update for the PlayStation 4. While a simple update might not sound all that important, 2.50 added some long-awaited features: most notably, the oft-requested Suspend/Resume feature.
Before the update, entering into Rest Mode would close out any games or applications — which made using the mode somewhat pointless. The 2.50 update introduced the ability to play a game, enter Rest Mode, then turn the console on and resume playing seamlessly.
To be honest, it was basically Sony playing catch-up (Microsoft's Xbox One had featured something similar since launch), but the fact that the new features worked would be more than enough to make up for the long wait.
Except that the update didn't work — not for everyone, at least. In the months since the update was released, some players have noticed that the PlayStation 4 is struggling a bit more than it used to. It seems like the Suspend/Resume feature uses quite a bit of processing power, and the new social features take a toll on the console as well. As a result, certain PlayStation 4 units could become a bit unstable from time to time.
Thankfully, those issues should now be a thing of the past: Sony just released the 2.55 Update, which will help the PlayStation 4 handle all of the new features that 2.50 introduced.
In terms of new features, the 2.55 Update doesn't have much — in fact, it doesn't have any. The 2.55 Update is solely dedicated to helping with system stability. Don't expect your PlayStation 4 to do anything new — just expect it to do everything else a bit more smoothly.
The 233 MB download can be installed as a standard update or as a fresh install (though the install takes up more space at 784 MB). For instructions on both installation methods, head on over to Sony's official site.
