For the past few years, PlayStation Plus members have awaited news of free games available for each month with baited breath. Those announcements usually came about a week before a month began, but for the past few months, Sony's announcements have been happening later, usually after the first of the month.
This month is no different, but as it is only July 1, the list of free PlayStation Plus games actually arrives earlier than in previous months.
Unfortunately, though, the titles are relatively lackluster, much like previous months. It's been some time since Sony offered a non-archaic AAA title with its free lineups, and this month sees no such titles for any of its systems.
So, what can PlayStation Plus members look forward to this month? The company, perhaps knowing that it's not offering a lot, offers four PlayStation 4 games, including the multiplayer Rocket League arcade game, fantasy stealth game Styx: Master of Shadows and the puzzler Mousecraft. There's also indie adventure game Entwined.
As far as indie games go, these four are good offerings, and, according to the comments on the post on PlayStation's blog announcing this month's free PlayStation Plus titles, PlayStation fans seem excited about Rocket League.
For the PlayStation 3, though, we still don't see a single AAA title, although many of those titles are older now and should be available to the program. The PlayStation 3, though, only gets Rain, Entwined and Mousecraft.
PlayStation Vita members, though, get four games: Mousecraft, Rain, Entwined and Geometry Wars 3.
So, is a PlayStation Plus membership still worth it? With Xbox Live Gold offering more AAA titles, Xbox One users probably disagree: last month, Xbox Live Gold members received Thief and Just Cause 2. This month, Xbox Live Gold members get Assassins Creed: Black Flag and Gears of War 3.
It seems, at least with its PlayStation program, PlayStation has some catching up to do.
