The standalone 20th Anniversary DualShock 4 controller is up for pre-order now and both Amazon and GameStop will begin shipping the limited edition gamepad on September 30, a Wednesday.
Sony hasn't announced North American availability for the gamepad, but Amazon and GameStop are accepting preorders for $65, and has given a date when the controllers will ship out. Right now, Sony has only stated that it plans to sell the limited edition gamepads in Europe in September.
"Launching September across Europe, this limited edition controller is designed in the unmistakeable 'Original Grey' colour like the first PlayStation console and also features the iconic original colored PlayStation family logo," says Sony Europe.
The 20th Anniversary Dual Shock 4 controller is offered in Black, Glacier White, Magma Red, Original Gray, Urban Camouflage and Wave Blue. Unlike the Dual Shock 4 packed with the 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4, this gamepad's touchpad is decorated with dots instead of 1s and 0s.
Previously, the gamepad was only available in a bundle with the 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4. Stock of those bundles have long since been depleted and Microsoft, on top of that, recently introduced Xbox One's Elite controller.
"We set out to create a performance-class controller to meet the needs of today's competitive gamers," says Microsoft. "Designed in collaboration with pro-level players, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller unlocks your full potential and adapts to your unique style of play."
Sony's more affordable gamepad will launch a month before Microsoft releases its $150 Xbox Elite Controller. That controller battle is just the latest skirmish in a console war that's as competitive as ever.
On another front, Sony and Microsoft are trading blows over console storage space. Microsoft got the jump on Sony with that one, releasing its 1 TB Xbox One console roughly a month before Sony answers with its 1TB Ultimate Player Edition PlayStation 4.
That battle is still very much active, and not just because Sony hasn't release the UPE PlayStation 4 yet. There's also the issue of pricing.
Microsoft slashed the price of the original Xbox One when it released the 1TB variant of the console, but Sony hasn't released pricing details just yet. The original PlayStation 4 could see a price cut or the UPE could come at a higher price point.
