LG Unveils Band Play: A Smartphone With A 1-Watt Speaker

LG has announced a new Android-based smartphone named the Band Play, which will be packing a 1-watt speaker.

The mid-range smartphone has an unusual name, but the Band Play's main offering should still be able to attract customers to purchase the device.

Geared towards music aficionados with a 1-watt speaker within the Band Play, users can expect a rich and clear sound when playing music, movies or video games.

In addition to the 1-watt speaker, users that purchase the Band Play that look to maximize the smartphone's music capabilities will also receive a pair of LG QuadBeat 3 earphones as included in the box. These earphones are among the official accessories that come with the LG G4, which is currently the company's flagship smartphone.

The Band Play ships with Android 5.1 Lollipop and features a 5-inch display with a 720 x 1,280 pixel resolution. The device also has a 13MP rear-facing camera that comes with a laser auto-focus system, and a 5MP front-facing, wide-angled camera for taking selfies.

The smartphone is powered by a 64-bit, 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor and 2GB worth of RAM, with a 2,300 mAh removable battery and 16GB of expandable storage.

The device also packs a "focus mode" which allows users to avoid being distracted by the Band Play by cutting off all data and Wi-Fi networks from the smartphone, along with automatic rejections of all incoming phone calls.

LG will be releasing the Band Play in its home country of South Korea within the week for a price of 394,800 Korean won, which is roughly equivalent to $356. The smartphone will come in two colors of either black or white.

LG, however, did not indicate whether it is also planning to release the Band Play in other countries such as the United States.

Users that are interested in acquiring the smartphone if LG does not make an official launch of the Band Play in the United States may still get the chance to do so through online retail giant Amazon, which has been known to sell devices without official launches in the United States into the country. Recently, the company has started selling the HTC One M9+, but the smartphone units being sold come with the limitation of not being compatible with the 4G networks in the country.
