Fans of Fifty Shades of Grey got a treat at midnight on June 18, because hours before bookshops opened, the sequel to the hit novel hit Kindle and the downloading ensued.
Grey is a retelling of E.L. James' runaway novel, told from the point of view of Christian Grey, the title character who has a thing for whips, blindfolds and young, impressionable girls like Anastasia Steele.
The first three books in the Fifty Shades Trilogy originally started as E.L. James' foray into fanfiction. She enjoyed the Twilight series of teenage vampires so much that she created her own version of Bella and Edward's possible bedroom tirades. However, her fanfiction was so well-received when she posted it online for other fans to read that she got to work on turning them into her very own set of novels that garnered her a fan-following and book-to-movie deals of her own.
The new book takes you back to when Ana first met Christian, a business tycoon with some out of the ordinary interests. It even delves into his childhood, which may explain some of his more painful and pleasurable fetishes.
According to James, Christian Grey is a fascinating character, and his side of the story will show even more levels to him that readers have been wanting to know about.
"Christian is a complex character ... and readers have always been fascinated by his desires and motivations," she said on Instagram.
The original books topped the Kindle download charts. Reportedly, this was due to readers being to embarrassed to be seen with a hard copy of the racy, erotica novel.
The newest book, Grey, has also already been at the front of Kindle's preorder list. As soon as the download of the book went live, fans were all too quick to stay up for hours to read every single word, some even live-tweeting as they read.
Readers have been saying that Christian Grey's account of his escapades with Ana are full of self-doubt. However, where Ana recounted her story like a "fumbling school girl," Grey's narrative reads like a YouPorn play-by-play.
"The sex is hotter than ever," some reviews say, and many are jokingly thankful that Grey is much more explicit in his version of events and does not give a f--- about Ana's "inner goddess" nonsense.
While Grey is still steaming hot on the shelves, fans are already asking for more. Since Grey will most likely be a trilogy, just like the Fifty Shades novels, E.L. James is only too happy to deliver.
