Video game graphics have come a long way. Remember how games looked like in their eight-bit glory days?
One upcoming game release is currently the subject of debate among fans since they first got a glimpse of its trailer. Many gamers feel like there hasn't been that much development in terms of graphics with Fallout 4 when compared to its predecessor Fallout 3.
The post-apocalyptic, action role-playing and open-world game begins its story in October 2077 as the players take shelter in Vault 111 to survive a nuclear bombing. The survivors awaken 200 years later to a retro-future. This is where their challenges begin.
Gamers can expect new changes from Fallout 4, such as the ability to collect, upgrade and build thousands of items in the crafting system. Players can also choose from a wide range of weapons, armor, chemicals and food. Building and managing entire settlements are also part of the game.
Even with all these exciting, new challenges, some fans are not impressed with the graphic upgrades of the game. At E3 this week, Fallout 4 game director Todd Howard released a statement on how Bethesda Game Studios worked to improve Fallout 4 and what the continuing goal is for the fans.
"I think with each of our games, the graphics [are] always going to move along. Not just the graphics, but memory is important to us. How much memory it has. If we make a world that has, not just more details, but more dynamic details that we can keep track of and stream in and load quicker, all of that suspends your disbelief that this is a real world. The graphics matter, they do matter in suspending your disbelief," he said.
Looking back at Fallout 3 screenshots and trailers, there is sameness to the environment and feel in Fallout 4, but it is quite evident that significant improvements were made to Fallout 4, giving it a fluid appearance.
With Howard's statement at the E3, it's exciting to see how the developers intend to level up the gaming quality for its fans, and it is also reassuring to know that there is more to come, at least with the Fallout series.
Expect Fallout 4 in November for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.
