Exciting news about Fallout 4, eh? It's coming this November, which isn't that far away.
But if you're anything like us, still wiping the drool off your chin, November may seem like an eternity. Good thing Bethesda came up with something to help us with the wait.
In addition to all the console gaming goodness announced tonight, Bethesda also trotted out its first-ever iPad game, called Fallout Shelter. Imagine The Sims crossed with Fallout, in a scenario where you play as the Overseer of a Vault of your own making. Every decision for your residents and your Vault is yours to make, from resource management down to the names of the characters.
Need workers with a specific skill? Build a room that trains residents for that skill. Need more residents? Pair a couple up and send them off to do what comes naturally. Be ready to defend your Vault from raiders that could show up at any time. For each achievement or victory, you'll get a lunchbox with random loot inside.
Many of Fallout Shelter's gameplay mechanics and modes were inspired by older games that were favorites of the developers. The visuals are stylized around Vault Boy, with all of the characters, rooms and objects presented in a similar cartoon-like appearance.
The biggest news of all is that Fallout Shelter is a free game, and it was set to start rolling out around the world tonight after the E3 event. Bethesda even took a dig at other App Store games by pointing out that Fallout Shelter doesn't use paywall timers. You can play the entire game 100% for free, with no impediments. In-app purchases are available for extra lunchboxes if you wish, but they are in no way required. You don't need an Internet connection to play either, so you can play wherever and whenever.
At press time, Fallout Shelter hadn't made it into the App Store yet, but it should be available there within the next 24 hours.
