Once again, it's Magic Johnson with the assist.
Just as successful in business (running his multi-billion-dollar Magic Johnson Enterprises) as he was in the NBA (winning five championships with the Los Angeles Lakers), Johnson is set to join Square's board of directors this summer.
"I am ready to get to work as a member of Square's Board of Directors so that any business, in any community, can compete and win," Johnson said in a press release statement for the portable point of sale register service, as reported by Tech Crunch.
He also tweeted in Square's direction: "I can't wait to get started! I'm ready to roll my sleeves up and get to work! @square."
A source with knowledge of the partnership told Tech Crunch that Johnson will be counted on to help Square enhance the diversity of its outreach to urban and underserved small businesses — something the hoops legend has done very well in the business world. After all, Johnson segued a career of dishing out sweet assists on the basketball court to doing much of the same with minorities in businesses.
"I have the deepest admiration for Earvin as a tireless champion for creating economic opportunity in underserved communities," Square CEO Jack Dorsey said in the press release statement. "As a successful entrepreneur and advocate for economic inclusion, Earvin's unique perspective will be invaluable to our community of sellers and our board. We are honored to have him."
