Samsung Galaxy Note 5 Would Reportedly Feature USB Type-C Port

The next-generation Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will reportedly feature a USB 3.1 Type-C connector, which would provide several benefits.

The Galaxy Note 5 phablet is not expected until September 2015, but the rumor mill is nonetheless busy churning in anticipation. Rumors so far have hinted at all sorts of advanced specs and features, from a 4K display to 4GB of RAM and a new Exynos processor that would pack the CPU, GPU, RAM, and LTE modem in a single chip.

Although nothing is official at this point and the Galaxy Note 5 is still several months away, a new report now reveals another interesting tidbit of information.

Citing insiders familiar with the matter, as well as various statements from Samsung employees on Weibo, Korean website Naver claims that the upcoming Galaxy Note 5 will rock a new USB 3.1 Type-C port.

This would mark the first time Samsung adopts USB Type-C, significantly boosting the speed of data transfers to and from the device. For those unfamiliar with the technology, USB 3.1 Type-C can deliver twice the transfer rate of the USB 3.0 standard, meaning 10 Gbps vs. 5 Gbps. At the same time, Type-C cables also run at 20 volts and 5 amps of power, allowing users to enjoy notably faster charging, as well as data transfers.

The USB Type-C is also easier to plug in due to the fact that it's reversible, which means you can't plug it into the port the wrong way.

The new report from Naver further disputes previous rumors that the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 would feature a 4K display. At the same time, the publication notes that USB 3.1 Type-C, combined with double the bandwidth, would enable the device to output to a 4K display.

Previous rumors have also indicated that the Galaxy Note 5 would come in several storage options ranging from 32GB to 128GB just like the Galaxy S6, but it remains unclear whether it will feature microSD support or not. Lastly, the device is also expected to boast upgrades in the camera department, potentially rocking a 20-megapixel rear shooter.

None of these purported specifications are confirmed at this point, however, so it is best to take all rumors and leaks with a dose of skepticism. The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 should make its official debut at IFA 2015 in September and more information will surely surface until then, but it all remains in the rumor state until the company makes a formal announcement.
