Activision is back with a new Skylanders iteration, marrying video game play with real-world toys in the latest SuperChargers title.
The popular Skylanders franchise debuted back in 2011 and has generated over $3 billion in sales ever since, while also selling more than 250 million toys. Skylanders SuperChargers is the fifth installment in the series, following the 2014 TrapTeam hit.
The new title will continue the good vs. evil battle of the franchise, taking things to the next level by combining video game action with physical sky, land and sea toys.
Players will be able to enjoy the game either as a SuperCharger or a Skylander, traveling the virtual realm with 20 neat vehicles including boats, jets, submarines, race cars, helicopters, tanks and more, according to a recent announcement.
Moreover, each vehicle will support a slew of upgrades or alterations within the game, modifying their design and performance. Players will also encounter rare mods as they explore the SuperChargers world, such as volcanic booster engines shooting lava rocks.
The vehicles of Skylanders SuperChargers further add to the in-game innovations. The toys come with functional moving parts that allow for real-world play, so they are not just collectibles. Activision says that vehicles make game play and the whole game environment more complex:
"You'll speed through the world and battle enemies in your high-speed land vehicle, explore the depths of the sea in a submarine, take to the air for intense dogfighting with 360 degrees of control, and so much more. With new land, air, and sea environments, Skylands is bigger and more diverse than ever."
The new-generation gaming consoles have enabled the developers from Vicarious Visions to make the universe more intricate, with "unprecedented details," in all aspects — from the graphics quality to the dynamic environmental effects.
Lastly, Skylanders SuperChargers will not only provide local cooperative play for a shared experience, but will also allow players to work with a friend. Players can either be gunners or pilots during vehicle gameplay, switching whenever they want, and they can unlock new exploration and combat skills.
The latest Skylanders SuperChargers will be available on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and 3, Nintendo Wii U, Wii, and 3DS, and the iPad, launching on September 20 in North America. For more information about the new game, check out the video below.
