Stomping all over a country's iconic landmarks is a curious way to be granted citizenship, but it appears to have worked out for Godzilla.
The world's favorite radioactive dinosaur was recently chosen as an official tourism ambassador for Tokyo in order to help promote interest and travel in the region. Not only is he now a tourism ambassador, Godzilla also has official residency papers and everything! It only took 60 years since his first appearance to find a place to stay.
Turns out Godzilla will be staying in Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward. Where he manages to find a place to sleep is a mystery. The first 3,000 fans who arrived at the Shinjuku Ward office received a copy of Godzilla's (or Gojira, as he is known in Japan) official residency papers earlier this week.
Here is a translation of the document from Anime News Network, and you can check out the image below.
Name: Godzilla
Address: Shinjuku-ku, Kabuki-cho, 1-19-1
Date of birth: April 9, 1954 [the year of the release of the very first Godzilla film]
Date of becoming a Shinjuku resident: April 9, 2015
Reason for special residency: Promoting the entertainment of and watching over the Kabuki-cho neighborhood and drawing visitors from around the globe in the form of the Godzilla head built atop the Shinjuku TOHO Building.
Previous visits to Shinjuku Ward: 3 times; Godzilla (1984), Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991), Godzilla 2000 Millennium (1999)
The district has definitely been "Godzilla-fied" as of late. Two special Godzilla themed hotel rooms are now available, with one of them overlooking the newly erected Godzilla head that looms over the district.
Godzilla will once again return to Japanese theaters next summer in the first Japanese-made Godzilla movie in a decade. Meanwhile, Gareth Edwards is set to return and direct Godzilla 2, the sequel to last year's Hollywood reboot.
