The landscape of online short films is changing rapidly.
If you haven't checked in with Vimeo or YouTube in a while, it's time. The low quality, home movie days are over. Thanks to sophisticated software being readily available to all, not to mention that there are far more rising, talented filmmakers than Hollywood has the resources to hire, the short film has come of age.
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of brilliant short films online, waiting for perusal. Some of them are simply film enthusiasts wanting to see what they can come up with. The majority of them are calling cards for budding directors.
Such is the case with this staggeringly cool short called The Leviathan, by Ruairi Robinson. Created as a pitch or proof-of-concept, The Leviathan tells the story of an alien world in the distant future that's just one of the many settled by mankind. Thanks to the wonders of dark matter, humanity has found the means to travel faster than light and colonize the galaxy. There's just one little problem.
The source of that dark matter is the eggs of these gargantuan whale-like creatures that swim through the air. And they have to be harvested, which is needless to say, a mighty dangerous proposition. The eye-popping effects are worthy of last summer's Godzilla, but the story is intriguing as well, with a mention of forced labor in the harvesting process.
You'll see the ending coming a mile away, but that makes it no less effective.
Hey big Hollywood studios, greenlight Mr. Ruairi Robinson's incredible The Leviathan. We'll show up to see it in droves, promise!
