After setting the stage for Battleworld over the last two weeks with Secret Wars #1 and #2, Marvel is finally ready to dive full-force into this fascinating new world. You'll get a sampling of titles and genres from across Battleworld this week, along with a few other unrelated but noteworthy books.
Let's get to it.
A-Force #1
Marvel Says: Marvel's Mightiest Women finally get their own explosive series! In a secluded corner of the Battleworld, an island nation is fiercely protected by a team of Avengers the likes of which has only ever been glimpsed before. Fighting to protect the small sliver of their world that's left, the Amazing A-FORCE stands shoulder-to-shoulder, ready to take on the horde!
Why You Should Care: It's one of the most-hyped titles of the year, and it's channeling a bit of a Themyscira vibe with the "island protected by women" thing. We're curious to see where this goes.
Ultimate End #1
Marvel Says: MILES MORALES and the rest of the heroes of the ULTIMATE U face final extinction As the end of their world becomes inevitable, will the heroes' heartbreaking sacrifices make any difference? The dramatic end of an era begins here!
Why You Should Care: We still hold a grudge that Brian Michael Bendis spent over 100 issues investing us in the life of Ultimate Peter Parker only to kill him and ditch most of his supporting cast (not that Miles isn't a worthy successor). But if anybody can give the Ultimate universe's finale the gravitas and emotion it needs, it's Bendis. We're also loving Marvel's return to the old "Ultimate" branding.
Secret Wars: Battleworld #1
Marvel Says: When the Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe collide, there is only... Battleworld! Featuring the fights, battles and blow-ups that are just TOO BIG for Secret Wars! When a Dr. Strange-possessed Punisher goes on the run, only Spider-Man, Wolverine, Hulk and Ghost Rider can track him down! Question: What happens when M.O.D.O.K. recruits every single M.O.D.O.K. ever for his evil schemes? Answer: M.O.D.O.K. M.A.D.N.E.S.S.!
Why You Should Care: Because the mission statement is to take the "Battleworld" concept to its craziest and most entertaining extremes.
Planet Hulk #1
Marvel Says: A forbidden zone of wild HULKS. A battle-worn gladiator named STEVE ROGERS. A journey that could break the spirit of a world's greatest freedom fighter. PLUS: A back up story by a surprise creative team!
Why You Should Care: A gladiatorial Captain America in a land overrun by Hulks? C'mon, who wouldn't want to read that.
Master of Kung-Fu #1
Marvel Says: Welcome to the mystical land of K'UN LUN, where the study of martial arts reigns supreme! In a world where everyone is well-trained in at least some form of deadly combat, what becomes of a drunken, drop-out failure? If anyone speaks out against Emperor Zu, the price is their head! Good thing Shang-Chi's a man of discretion and... Oh, who are we kidding. This is going to get nasty.
Why You Should Care: When was the last time you read a book about a society in which everyone practices martial arts? Writer Haden Blackman has constructed an intricate mythology around 13 combat schools, unique powers that each one can teach you to unlock, a wicked emperor and much more. Sounds (and looks) like a blast.
Star Wars #5
Marvel Says: THE GREATEST SPACE ADVENTURE OF ALL TIME CONTINUES! As Luke goes home in search of the truth about his late mentor, Leia takes Han on a secret mission of vital importance to the Rebellion. Unfortunately, they both run into some unfriendly encounters.
Why You Should Care: It's one of the top-selling books right now for a reason.
Convergence #7
DC Says: The largest battle in the history of the Multiverse is here! Who will win and who will lose when Deimos battles the combined might of the Earth 2 survivors, the heroes from Kingdom Come, the Titans and Parallax? All this and more, as the heroes of The New 52 join the fight!
Why You Should Care: We're still interested to see which (if any) long lost city "wins" the right to survive past Convergence, even if the journey to get there has been far from enthralling.
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency #1
IDW Says: An all-new comic series based on Douglas Adams' beloved holistic detective! Dirk arrives in San Diego to face a new country, new cases and new threats: reincarnation, for starters...!
Why You Should Care: It's based on a franchise created by Douglas Adams that, despite having nothing to do with hitchhiking, has quite the cult following. The ridiculous main character has all of the quirky traits Adams is known for.
Insufferable #1
IDW Says: What happens when your crime-fighting sidekick grows up to be an arrogant, ungrateful douchebag who makes Kanye look humble? Worse, what on Earth could force the two of you together for one last case? Nocturnus and his former protege, Galahad, will find out-if they don't kill one another first.
Why You Should Care: Writer Mark Waid's been hitting some career highs lately, and the premise sounds like a gas.
