In case you missed it, this weekend saw the release of the first official photo of the Suicide Squad movie cast in their full costumes.
Not only did those costumes nearly blow up the Internet, but the release of the photo saw fans of the famous comic book group split on if they loved or hated the characters' new looks.
Some of the costumes aren't far from what those characters wear in the comic books, while others seem more toned down and changed to better fit DC's ideas for their movie universe.
Whatever the case, we look at those costumes and determine how much they are similar or different to their comic book counterparts.
Slipknot (Adam Beach)
The movie version of Slipknot looks a lot different than his comic book persona. In the comics, Slipknot has a full-on spandex costume, including some killer gold boots, a mask, a lasso, a rope belt and a bell-sleeved top. The movie version is much simpler and leaves off all that, in lieu of a look that makes him seem more like a real-world mercenary and less like a comic book character.
Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney)
In the comics, Captain Boomerang looks like any other street denizen. He doesn't have a costume, but just regular clothes (in mostly blue colors) and a sash that holds his boomerangs. His trademark, though, is some serious sideburns, and it looks like they've kept that image in the film. Boomerang's film persona seems similar to his comic book one, and they've even gone for the blue hoodie (with "CAPTAIN" across the chest) underneath his heavy coat. He's also wearing a hat in the movie version, identical to that of the comic book version of the character.
Enchantress (Cara Delevingne)
The Enchantress film costume is a complete departure from the comic book costume. In the comic books, Enchantress wears a low-cut green dress with a matching witch's hat. However, in the movie version, it looks like she's bypassed clothes altogether. It's hard to tell, but it seems she's in a gray sort of bikini, with lots of jewelry. Instead of looking enchanting like her comic book counterpart, she looks more like that crazy ghost girl from The Ring. We're also not sure about the placement of that moon symbol on her forehead: is she channeling Sailor Moon?
Katana (Karen Fukuhara)
Interestingly enough, the rumors about Fukuhara's role had her portraying Plastique, but one look at this costume reveals her as Katana (the mask is a dead giveaway). In the comic books, Katana wears that mask, along with red and black clothing, similar to Fukuhara in this new photo of the film cast. Even the haircut is the same.
Rick Flagg (Joel Kinnaman)
In the comics, Rick Flagg doesn't have a costume: he's usually wearing army green. It seems like they stuck with that for the film version of the character, although the film version has more facial hair than the original (who is clean-shaven).
Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie)
Of all the Suicide Squad members, Harley Quinn probably has the biggest closet full of outfits, so this probably isn't the only one we'll see her in. In the film version, she's got the signature blonde hair, with one side blue (instead of black, as in the comics) and the other red. She's dropped her blacks and reds, though, and instead of a corset, she's in a t-shirt and short shorts with fishnet stockings. This version of Harley is Harley on top and Tank Girl on bottom. The film version also has her sporting tattoos similar to that of the film version's Mr. J, (aka, the Joker). It also seems that in the film, Harley gives up her giant-shaped mallet from the comic books for a regular bat.
Deadshot (Will Smith)
In the group photo, we don't really get a good look at Deadshot and he doesn't look like he does in the comics. However, a photo released of the character by himself shows a Deadshot that looks nearly identical to the character in the comic books, complete with his signature mask. The costume itself is a little different, but it looks like the film plans on keeping him in the same colors as the comic books.
Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)
In the comic books, Croc is part crocodile, so he's scaly and green. However, in the photo of the entire Suicide Squad cast, he's looking rather gray (like in Batman: The Animated Series), although he's still scaly. Of course, that could just be the lighting (muted colors with comic book films has become trendy). He's also got the teeth associated with the comic book Croc: each tooth comes to a sharp point. The film version looks big, burly and scary, which is what you want to see in that character.
El Diablo (Jay Hernandez)
In the comics, El Diabo is mostly shirtless, muscular and sporting tribal tattoos. In the movie version, he's wearing a t-shirt and a coat, so we have no idea if those body tattoos exist. However, the face tattoos are there from the comics.
