'Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman' #34: Review

Last week, Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman began a new storyline called "Vendetta." That story sent Diana to a war-torn country as a peacemaker, struggling to bring two rivaling factions together and get them to end their war.

This week, Diana returns, but the warring factions soon become the least of her worries. Now, she must face an even more threatening adversary: Ares, the god of war.

But why has Ares come to this country as Diana seeks to broker peace? And what exactly does he want?

The answers to those questions and more lie within the pages of Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #34.

Last week, we saw the arrival of Ares at the end of issue #33. Issue #34 picks up where the previous book left off, with Ares facing off against soldiers sent to help Wonder Woman as she hosts an important peace talk. Being the god of war, does Ares does give them a chance — but what chance do mortal men have against a god?

After Ares defeats the soldiers, he collects his demon-like army and begins marching towards the location of the peace talks. There, he declares war on the country, thanks to its long history of war.

This week's issue is chockfull of action — not just from Ares as he declares war upon the warring people, but also in Diana's confrontation of the god. She starts taking down his army one by one after Ares refuses to have a reasonable discussion with her.

This is Wonder Woman at her strongest, and any reader will take joy in watching her as she goes to the battlefield. Both the writing and the artwork are powerful here — carrying on what Josh Elder, Jamal Igle and Wendy Broome started in issue #33.

Ares also tells an interesting parable at the beginning of the issue, tying in the mythological elements to the story at hand. It's a good piece of writing by Elder.

Most impressive, though, are Wonder Woman's fight scenes by Igle and Broome as the Amazonian princess fights minions of Ares' army. The last panel shows off Diana at her finest, leaving her in a nice fighting pose that will carry over well into next week's issue when the story continues.

The only real problem with Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #34 is that we have to wait a whole week before we can find out what happens next. Will Diana defeat Ares? And how? Will this country that's always known war ever find peace?
