In Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #32, our favorite Amazonian princess must fight to save Themyscira from the awakening of Typhon — the father of all monsters.
But as we saw in Issue #31 – the first of a two-part storyline – Diana isn't alone. Poison Ivy came to Themyscira because Gaia told her that something was amiss.
In Part One, Diana and Ivy joined up to fight the evil that threatened Amazonians and the world. The last time we saw them, the two women were jumping into a volcano dressed in full battle gear.
In the new issue – which picks up where we left off – we start aboveground, where Diana's people, the Amazonians, have to fight a massive battle against the monsters unleashed by Typhon's awakening.
Meanwhile, Diana and Ivy face off against Typhon himself. From the beginning, it seems that all hope is lost, especially when Diana suggests that the only way to kill Typhon is by dropping the mountain on him — something she's not strong enough to do.
Can Diana and Ivy still save the day?
Obviously, the answer is yes. We won't go into spoilery details, but let's just say this comic shows a different version of Poison Ivy than we've seen before and proves that sometimes, even the villain can be the hero.
Again, writer Derek Fridolfs does good work in continuing the story from the previous issue, and we especially like the twist with Ivy's character. The feeling that Ivy and Diana are actually very alike continues, and it's interesting to see two otherwise unrelated characters become friends.
Artist Tom Fowler loves action poses, and his work shines here — particularly in battle scenes between the Amazonians and the monsters. His version of Typhon, too, is terrifying — something out of nightmares. In Greek mythology, Typhon is the most feared of all the world's monsters, and he certainly seems that way here.
Ivy also takes on a less comical appearance in this issue, appearing wrapped in tree-like battle armor that makes her seem fiercer than in the previous issue. The last few panels are particularly good, further signifying the similarities between Diana and Ivy.
The only complaint is that we were left wanting more. It would have been particularly nice to see a drawn-out battle between the Amazonians and the monsters, as well as more on the fight between Diana and Ivy against Typhon.
All in all, this is definitely a comic worth picking up, especially if you want to find out what happened after issue #32.
