Everyone's favorite Amazon returns to her home island of Themiscyra in Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #31, but she doesn't receive the homecoming she expected.
Instead, as Diana arrives on the island, the ground rumbles and fire shoots from a volcano: it seems something evil has returned with her; something that the Amazonians call "the father of all monsters."
But Diana isn't alone, because another familiar figure from DC Comics, Poison Ivy, most notoriously known as one of Batman's many enemies, arrives on Themiscyra seeking peace and help in fighting this thing that the Earth/Gaia has told her about.
Together, Diana and Ivy set off to fight the evil.
Therein lies the plot of Sensation Comics Featuring Wonder Woman #31. It's an interesting set-up to a two-part story that will obviously lead up to quite a bit of action and a massive fight. What's so great about this story, as well as the Sensation Comics take on Wonder Woman, in general, is that each storyline is its own, having nothing to do with the New 52 and giving us a more classic Wonder Woman figure that we're all familiar with.
Writer Derek Fridolfs does a good job of setting up the story and the tension, even adding in a little surprise when Poison Ivy shows up in the forests on the island. He teases that there's a similarity between the two women, and that's even more obvious when they dive into a volcano to fight the evil that's attacking them.
However, as is often the case with this particular title, the issue is over quickly (of course, that's probably because it has a $0.99 price tag). At the end of the comic, there's a feeling of "that's it?" and you're not just left wanting more with the story, you're left just wishing there were more.
Artist Tom Fowler draws a traditional Wonder Woman, one who looks strong and ready to fight at any moment. Each pose is one of action, illustrating Wonder Woman's no-nonsense attitude when it comes to fighting for the things she believes in. In comparison, though, Ivy seems almost comical and she often looks ridiculous standing beside the Amazonian princess. As to whether this was intentional or not, though, is anyone's guess.
However, with its low price, any Wonder Woman fan would enjoy this set-up to what we expect will be an exciting second-parter. We're looking forward to seeing how Wonder Woman and Poison Ivy work together as a team in defeating the thing that could destroy the world.
