The Hateful Eight has not been an easy movie to make. The film has always been designed as Quentin Tarantino's love letter to classic Westerns, but a script leak early in development nearly got the film canned — in fact, for a while, it had been.
Thankfully, Tarantino decided to move forward with the film, and The Hateful Eight is now on course for a release sometime later this year.
Unfortunately, fans still haven't seen anything from the upcoming movie. Sure, there are bound to be some Tarantino tropes and returning actors in the film, but in terms of actual footage, nothing from The Hateful Eight has ever been shown.
While the new trailer doesn't really change that, it does finally give fans an idea of what to expect from the film and drops a few hints about what might happen.
Despite the fact that the trailer doesn't contain any actual footage, it still feels like a Tarantino piece. The harsh colors, the score, the way in which the characters are presented — it's almost reminiscent of Kill Bill's early trailers. It's a gorgeously done piece, and while it's disappointing that there's no actual footage in the video, it does drop some hints about what fans will see.
Most importantly, the trailer lists the film's titular heroes, The Hateful Eight. In order, they are:
- Major Marquis Warren, "The Bounty Hunter" (Samuel L. Jackson)
- John Ruth, "The Hangman" (Kurt Russell)
- Daisy Domergue, "The Prisoner" (Jennifer Jason Leigh)
- Chris Mannix, "The Sheriff" (Walton Goggins)
- Bob, "The Mexican" (Demian Bichir)
- Oswald Mobray, "The Little Man" (Tim Roth)
- Joe Gage, "The Cow Puncher" (Michael Madsen)
- General Sandy Smithers, "The Confederate" (Bruce Dern)
The film will take place several years after the American Civil War came to a close, and sees the group trapped in the middle of a vicious blizzard. While they start off as strangers, the trailer promises that the eight do have a connection to one another — what exactly that connection is (and how it all plays out) remains to be seen.
Unfortunately, it seems as if the trailer may have gone live early: as of this writing, The Hateful Eight's teaser has been removed from Vimeo. Thankfully, copies exist on other platforms (such as the video above), but the official Vimeo version has been taken down. At this point, there's no telling why it was removed — with any luck, it'll be restored shortly.
The Hateful Eight is no stranger to production mistakes, but at least a teaser going live early — especially one with no actual film footage present — is something that's relatively easy to handle.
Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight is set to debut sometime later this year.
