Huawei has taken the wraps off of its new P8 smartphone, which features a very classy design and specs capable of standing up to any flagship device on the market.
One flagship phone that is especially prominent in the Android world today is the Samsung Galaxy S6. But how does the lesser-known P8 stack up to the Galaxy S6?
Design
Huawei has clearly designed this device with current design trends in mind. Featuring a sleek unibody-type design and an industrial look, the P8 takes after the Samsung Galaxy S6, which arguably takes after the iPhone 6. The P8 is simplistic in design, especially when it comes to the edges, which offer a brushed metal look akin to other flagship phones on the market.
While the P8 certainly takes things a step further when it comes to design, that doesn't mean that it can take on the Galaxy S6, which many suggest is the best-designed smartphone from Samsung to date. The Galaxy S6 offers a more refined look, with more rounded corners and an overall more premium feel to it.
The design of the Samsung Galaxy S6 has led to Samsung removing the option for expandable storage and a removable battery. The Huawei, however, keeps a microSD card slot, enabling users to expand their storage if need be.
Display
Samsung has consistently remained a serious player when it comes to display, and the the Galaxy S6 is no different, with 577 pixels per inch in the 5.1-inch screen. The Huawei P8, by comparison, is not as impressive. Sitting at 424 ppi for a 5.2-inch display, the P8 is bested by the Galaxy S6, which has a far crisper screen. The Galaxy S6 essentially offers a 2K display, while Huawei is fine with offering a 1080p one. With that said, you won't be buying the P8 for its display.
Camera
Huawei has included a 13 megapixel sensor with an f/2.0 lens, LED flash and optical image stabilization, which is a feature that is popping up more and more on smartphones. While Huawei suggests that its camera on the P8 is better than average and includes professional features, this remains to be seen. The front-facing camera, however, is better than average in the device, sitting at 8 megapixels, which is great for the selfie-takers among us.
Samsung, of course, is offering a better than average camera, with a 16 megapixel snapper on the back of the device. The front-facing camera sits at 5 megapixels. The S6 is able to take video of up to 4K, while the P8 can only shoot video up to 1080p.
Under The Hood
Both Samsung and Huawei have decided to use their own processors rather than turning to companies like Qualcomm. Samsung's Exynos 7 processor offers eight cores and a processing speed of up to 2.1 GHz. Huawei includes its Kirin 930 SoC, also clocking in at around 2 GHz. With both devices including 3 GB of RAM, they should both easily be able to handle day-to-day tasks.
Conclusions
Samsung has created a masterpiece with the Galaxy S6, but it's a masterpiece that doesn't come cheap sitting at around $700. While the P8 has a comparable design and slightly lower specs, it also comes in at around half the price of the Galaxy S6, making it possibly better for the money. The Galaxy S6 is available around the world, with the Huawei P8 currently only being available in Europe and Asia.
