The PlayStation 4 2.50 Patch Hits Tomorrow: Here's What's In The Update

It seems like both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One are forever updating. Ever since the consoles were first released, a litany of updates have been made their way to both machines: using one of the consoles now and a year ago are two very different experiences. The PlayStation 4 has seen some of the more drastic updates as fan-requested features are added to the console, and the latest update features some of the most oft-requested additions yet.

Thankfully, fans don't have too much longer to wait: the 2.50 update, code-named 'Yukimura,' will be ready for download tomorrow morning.

2.50 is a big update, and comes with a long list of new features. The first is the ability to back up one's PlayStation 4 to an external hard drive: system settings, screenshots, video clips, saved data and - most importantly - the games themselves can be backed up to a properly formatted hard drive.

While an appropriately-sized hard drive might sound like an extra expense, it's still nice to have the option to back everything up.

There's also a massive list of new accessibility options coming to the console, including picture zoom, the ability to change the system's text size, and a number of different viewing options. Remote Play and Share Play are also getting a big boost, and streaming will now run at 60 fps in supported games.

There's also going to be a direct link to DailyMotion, for those who use something other than YouTube.

However, the biggest (and most requested) new feature is the 'Suspend/Resume' update. The PlayStation 4's Rest Mode basically put it to sleep, and let the console charge the controller and automatically download any updates. However, it was basically the same as turning the console off, and everything (apps, games, streaming) had to be reloaded after waking the PlayStation 4 up. Now, it's a far more seamless process: instead of rebooting the entire console, the PlayStation 4 comes out of Rest Mode exactly where you left it, similarly to how the Xbox One works.

It's a big update, and ones gamers have been asking about for a long time. It may have taken a while to get here, but at the very least, it seems like Sony is trying to listen to its fans.

The PlayStation 4 2.50 'Yukimura' update is scheduled to be released sometime tomorrow morning. For more details, head on over to the official PlayStation blog
