Last week, we told you about The Leviathan, an incredible short film by Ruairi Robinson. The sci-fi short features a gigantic, whale-like creature that "swims" through the air and the humans who harvest its eggs for the dark matter contained within.
One look at the short film and you'll agree with our assessment that Hollywood needs to get this movie made immediately.
Apparently, Hollywood was listening.
After a number of well-known producers booked time with Robinson to discuss making the movie, many of them were cut short thanks to Simon Kinberg of X-Men, Cinderella and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Kinberg struck fast, snatching up the rights with an offer that must have been strong enough to repel any and all others.
However, Kinberg's not alone. Another auteur who knows good high-concept science fiction when he sees it has signed up for The Leviathan as well. Neill Blomkamp, director of District 9, Elysium and Chappie will serve as executive producer, contributing his thoughts and ideas to the creative team.
The creative team also includes screenwriter Jim Uhls, who's written a script for the feature-length film. Uhls is best known for writing the adapted-from-a-novel screenplay for Fight Club. Creature design, concepts and modeling were handled by Weta Workshop's Adam Anderson, renowned sculptor Jordu Schell and Ben Mauro, an artist that worked on Lucy, Elysium, Chappie and contributed to the design of Smaug in The Hobbit.
Since it was posted online on March 17, 2015, it's received well over one million views on Vimeo and about half as much on YouTube. Numerous outlets have joined the chorus, commenting on the short's quality and calling on Hollywood to step up to the plate.
