Gameloft, on the first day of spring, has released a massive update for Modern Combat 5: Blackout and has made the first-person shooter free to play.
Modern Combat 5: Blackout is a military shooter for mobile devices that's sauced with the flavors and lingo of Activision's Call of Duty and EA's Battlefied series. The game, released in 2014, features both single-player campaign and mutliplayer action.
The spring update brings highly-demanded features, such as controller support and new weapons. Here's a full run-down of what's included in Modern Combat 5: Blackout's spring update:
The All-New Support Class
- Reinforce the assault, heavy, sniper and recon classes
- Deploy med kits to heal allies
- Enable teammates to re-spawn at the spot they died
- Enhance your own abilities while deployed
New Weapons
- Each class gets an extra weapons tier
- Light machine guns arrive with the introduction of the Support class
New Multiplayer Mode
- Zone Control sees players capturing and holding areas to rack up points
Gamepad Support
- Players can now use standard, formfitting or extended gamepads
New Character Customizations
- Weapon camos
- New masks and perks
- New individual and squad logos
- New kill signs
The light machine guns will deliver a "slightly" higher rate of fire than submachine guns and do more damage, but they'll be less accurate than the smaller weapons.
Along with the huge care package of new features and reinforcements, Modern Combat 5: Blackout is now free to play. Those who have paid for the game will receive veteran status, which gives them unlimited energy.
So, energy, the new element that veteran players will never have to worry about, is how Gameloft is monetizes the now free-to-play game. For free players, they'll need to pony up some funds to replenish their energy when their meters run low.
Modern Combat 5: Blackout has gone free to play because Gameloft wants to make the game's community as large as possible, according to Iulian Stefanescu, the game's producer.
"Right from the start, one of our aims was to bring the game into the hands as many people as possible so that our community would become larger and stronger," said Stefanescu. "A bigger community means that the game will have an increased lifetime, which translates into more updates and content for everybody."
