Here is an important life lesson for you -- don't trust strangers with your video games.
One Destiny player recently learned this the hard way, as he realized in horror that his hours upon hours of work in the game had just gone down the drain, thanks to his trusting nature.
The player, who goes by the name Cuckooknight HD in the below YouTube video, is the victim of a SharePlay scam. The PlayStation 4's SharePlay functionality exists to allow players to hand off control of their games to friends over the web. If a less experienced player is stuck on a particularly tough battle, for example, the player could virtually pass the controller to a more skilled friend in order to progress before having control handed back.
That isn't what happened here. Cuckooknight connects with a stranger going by the name KirmitTHEfrog. He hands the controls over using SharePlay expecting KirmitTHEfrog to help him discover a glitch that would "boost" his character.
If that sounds too good to be true, that's because it is. Cuckooknight then inexplicilty walks away from the television screen, giving KirmitTHEfrog the perfect opportunity to delete Cuckooknight's level 31 Warlock, level 26 Titan and a rare exotic weapon from a third character.
"Oh my God, no, seriously?" he says when he returns to his TV to find his weapon missing. He at first glances over the fact that both of his higher level characters (and hunderds of hours of work) are also missing, but when he does realize he can be heard sobbing in the background.
It's hard to say if this video is the real deal or an elaborate prank, but it just goes to show that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. And while this story has a sad ending for the time being, it's possible Destiny's developer, Bungie, might be able to restore Cuckooknight's characters and items.
So let this be a cautionary tale to all PS4 owners: Do not, I repeat, do not ever give control of your video game to a complete stranger on the internet. Otherwise this might happen.
