Phablet duel: LG G Pro 2 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 3

LG and Samsung are the ultimate rivals when it comes to their phablets. Although Samsung's Galaxy Note lineup usually outsells LG's G lineup, the new LG G Pro 2 may pose a challenge to the dominance of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

With phablets, it's all about the screen size. The LG G Pro 2 actually has a bigger display with its 5.9-inch diagonal. The Galaxy Note 3 only has a 5.7-inch display, which ironically, is now small by phablet standards. Both phablets feature Full HD display resolutions, so there is really no visible difference between the two displays in that sense.

However, there are some phablet fans who are willing to switch from one company to another just because the display is slightly bigger. The most devout phablet users often point to small, 7-inch tablets and say, "That's the phone I want," so LG could have a slight edge over Samsung in terms of its giant display. Still, Samsung has a following almost as loyal as Apple's, so this might not be the case here.

Both the G Pro 2 and the Galaxy Note 3 are powered by Qualcomm's quad-core Snapdragon 800 processor, running at 2.26 GHz. Some models of the Note 3 feature the Samsung Exynos 5 octa-core, running at 1.7 GHz, depending on the country in which it is sold. Essentially, there is no difference between the two phablets in processing power.

As far as RAM and storage go, the two phablets are basically the same. Both have 3 GB of RAM onboard and have a micro SD card slot for storage expansion up to 64 GB. The LG G Pro 2 comes in 16 and 32 GB options, while the Galaxy Note 3 can include up to 64 GB of storage. If you use a lot of space on your phablet with music, movies, books and apps, the Note 3 is the better choice.

The two phablets also offer nearly identical cameras. The Note 3 and G Pro 2 have 13-megapixel cameras on the back and 2-megapixel cameras on the front. Technically, the G Pro 2 has a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, but 0.1 of a megapixel probably won't make too much of a difference to anyone.

Both the Note 3 and G Pro 2 have 3200 mAh batteries onboard to power their massive displays. The Note 3 is somewhat smaller and lighter than the G Pro 2, but that's not surprising given the fact that the G Pro 2 has a bigger display. One advantage the LG phablet has over Samsung's is that it already features Android 4.4 KitKat. However, Samsung is currently updating the Note 3's OS to KitKat.

When you take a step back and look at the big picture, the differences between the two phablets are very small. In the end, it comes down to which brand you prefer. You could argue that since LG's G Pro 2 is the newer of the two phablets, it should have more of a wow factor than it does; that this contest really shouldn't be too close to call. Once Samsung releases the Note 4 in the near future, the LG G Pro 2 will be completely eclipsed.
