DC Unveils The New Suicide Squad, And There Isn't A Villain From The Movie In Sight

DC's New Suicide Squad will be launching after the publisher's '"Convergence" event in March, and while current Suicide Squad writer Sean Ryan will stay on board, the book will get a whole new team of villains. Even more surprising is that not a single one will be appearing in DC's upcoming Suicide Squad film.

The new team of villains assigned by the government to take on suicidal missions will consist of Parasite, Black Hand, Poison Ivy, Reverse Flash, Cheetah and a Talon assassin from the Court of Owls, as seen in Scott Snyder's New 52 Batman run. As usual, government manipulator Amanda Waller will be pulling the team's strings. The new team line-up was announced in the Channel 52 ad featured in this week's new DC comics.

It's an interesting line-up for sure. Longtime Suicide Squad member Deadshot is nowhere to be seen, nor is Harley Quinn, who has been a member of the team since the New 52 relaunch. Both villains are set to appear in the Suicide Squad film in 2016, to be played by Will Smith and Margot Robbie, respectively.

The Channel 52 ad says Parasite will serve as the team's secret weapon against a real world threat, ISIS. Black Hand will come in handy with his ability to resurrect the dead, and Poison Ivy can be awfully persuasive with her seductive charms. Cheetah and Talon are both deadly fighters, and Reverse Flash is, well, Reverse Flash. He runs fast.

A fresh set of villains is a welcome change. While there is a good chance a few of the more prominent Suicide Squad members of the past will find their way onto the team before the movie releases, it's still refreshing to see a whole new cast of characters for the time being. That is after all, the fun of Suicide Squad -- watching how a group of complete strangers (and psychopaths, for the most part) cooperate and get along to survive impossible odds. At the very least, the addition of Parasite should make for some strange team interactions.
