Sony: PlayStation 5 Sales Hit 60 Million Milestone, but Growth Slows

The latest Sony console is starting to lose its steam this year.

Sony's latest gaming console, the PlayStation 5 has finally surpassed 60 million units sold since its release four years ago. It's not an easy battle for PS5 since it's competing with other consoles in the market including Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch.

It's important to note that the console's rapid sales pace has not only outperformed its direct competitor, Xbox but also exceeded the previous sales trajectory of the PlayStation 4.

Despite this impressive achievement, recent data indicates that the PS5 might be experiencing a slight slowdown in sales momentum. Somehow, this could signal that the gaming machine is nearing its death.

Lifetime PS5 Sales Hit 61.7 Million Units

In its latest financial report, Sony disclosed that it sold 2.4 million PS5 consoles in the first quarter of its current fiscal year, which ended in June 2024. This brings the total lifetime sales of the PS5 to 61.7 million units, marking a significant achievement for Sony. The PS5 continues to sell at a better rate over the same period compared to the PS4.

PS5 Sales Saw Noticeable Decline in Q1 2024

According to ComicBook, the potential concern for Sony is the noticeable drop in PS5 sales during Q1 compared to the same period last year. In the previous fiscal year, Sony sold 3.3 million PS5 units in Q1, indicating a decline of nearly 1 million units this year. However, this decline is not unexpected, as sales for any video game console typically decrease the longer it remains on the market.

Sony's fiscal year projections had already anticipated fewer PS5 shipments compared to the previous period, so the results align with these expectations.

Potential Boost from PS5 Pro

One factor that could drive higher PS5 sales in the coming months is the anticipated release of the PS5 Pro. According to various reports, Sony is preparing to launch a "Pro" model of the PlayStation 5 with enhanced technical specifications.

While the console maker has not officially confirmed these reports, the PS5 Pro is rumored to debut during the holiday season. If this release occurs, it could lead to a significant surge in PS5 sales in the final months of 2024.

Outside talks about PS5 Pro, some speculate that PS6 is just around the corner. However, a Tech Times report last month said that it will be launched at least by 2027. We won't be shocked if its price tag exceeds $500 given the anticipated upgrades.

The PlayStation 5's sales performance has been remarkable, reaching over 60 million units sold in less than four years. Although sales may be starting to slow, the potential introduction of the PS5 Pro could rejuvenate interest and drive significant sales growth.

In the meantime, you can play Baldur's Gate 3 before the summer sale ends. According to Kotaku, the best video game of 2023 will be cheaper at the time.
