Google Is Working on a 'Group Navigation' Feature for Maps, Patent Application Reveals

Google Maps is developing a 'group navigation' feature to enhance the travel experience for friends and family traveling together.

Google Maps has long been a staple for solo travelers seeking the fastest route, avoiding traffic, and efficiently reaching their destinations.

Now, Google is looking to enhance the group travel experience with a new feature revealed in a recent patent application.

Called "providing navigation instructions to one device in view of another device," this potential feature brings "group navigation" to Google Maps, making it easier for multiple people traveling to the same destination to stay coordinated (via Phone Arena).

How Group Navigation Works

According to the patent application, the new feature allows one driver to input the destination and invite others to join the group.

All members must be Google users to participate. Once in the group, everyone receives personalized directions to the shared destination.

This includes turn-by-turn instructions tailored to their starting points, ensuring that each group member follows the most efficient route from their location.

A standout feature of this system is the sharing of Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA). This means if you arrive at the destination first, you can see when the rest of your party is expected to arrive, helping to manage any delays and keep the group informed.

Real-Time Traffic and Parking Information

The group navigation system also leverages real-time data to enhance the travel experience. The lead vehicle, typically the one that starts the group navigation, provides traffic updates to all other group members.

This includes alerts about traffic jams, road works, accidents, and suggestions for alternative routes. The feature makes sure that the whole party arrives at the destination on time and no one gets left behind and lost.

Additionally, the lead vehicle can share information about parking availability. This advanced coordination allows group members to know in advance where they should park upon arrival, reducing the stress and confusion often associated with finding a parking spot in busy areas.

Making Group Travel Less of a Hassle

The new group navigation feature addresses common issues faced during group travel.

For example, coordinating through calls or texts can be inconvenient and distracting. The patent aims to solve these problems by providing a system that ensures a smoother and more enjoyable journey for everybody.

Basically, the system allows users to add other members to their travel group, share travel progress, suggest meeting points, and provide real-time updates on road conditions.

The inclusion of features like voice chat between participants and coordinated stops or speed adjustments ensures everyone stays on the same page throughout the journey.

However, it is important to note that there is no information available yet on when users can expect this feature.

Similar features already exist, such as Waze's "Share your drive," which allows friends to follow each other's drives in real time. However, Google's group navigation aims to take this a step further by integrating a comprehensive suite of coordination tools directly into Google Maps.
