Volkswagen-Backed Scout Motors Starts Construction of $2 Billion Electric SUV Plant in South Carolina

The plant aims to produce 200,000 vehicles annually.

Volkswagen-backed Scout Motors has started the construction of its $2 billion electric SUV plant in South Carolina, marking a significant milestone for the company's expansion plans.

Instead of a conventional event, Scout Motors opted for a symbolic gesture by transporting a brick from its former factory site in Fort Wayne, Indiana, to the location of its new facility.

The company aims to position its $50,000 electric SUV as a blend of nostalgia and modern innovation, drawing inspiration from its iconic predecessors while leveraging electric vehicles' environmental and performance benefits.

"Today is less about construction and a building and more about a calling and a community," said Scout Motors President and CEO Scott Keogh. "We're here to celebrate the revitalization of an American icon and the reshoring of American jobs. On this land - with our hands and with our technology - we will build great vehicles."

The strategic location of the site, spanning approximately 1,600 acres, provides convenient access to major transportation networks and academic institutions specializing in automotive engineering.

Scout Motors aims to commence vehicle production by the end of 2026, with plans to achieve an annual production capacity of 200,000 vehicles.

Dr. Jan Spies, Scout Motors' Chief Production Officer, expressed satisfaction with the decision to establish the Production Center in Blythewood, emphasizing the company's commitment to leveraging local resources and expertise.

The symbolic gesture of receiving a brick from the original Scout factory in Fort Wayne underscored the company's respect for its heritage and legacy. This brick, donated by Harvester Homecoming and the Tippman Family, will serve as a tangible link between Scout Motors' past and future endeavors.

Advanced All-Electric Platform

Scout Motors' trucks and SUVs will be built on an advanced all-electric platform designed to deliver exceptional performance in various driving conditions.

With a focus on capability, durability, and sustainability, Scout Motors aims to participate in the competitive electric vehicle market, offering consumers an alternative to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles.

"Today's groundbreaking marks another milestone for Scout Motors and the entire state as we continue to move forward with this project that will supercharge the Midlands' economy," said McMaster.

"We applaud Scout Motors for their commitment, which will continue to move South Carolina towards a future defined by innovation and prosperity," he added.
