Intel has long been competitive in the CPU front and while most people only know if for its iCore processors, the company is innovating its approach toward chips. This includes a Linux kernel integrated Meteor Lake-S, which would allow both to co-exist.
Meteor Lake S Code for Linux Being Worked on by Intel Developers
As reported by Phoronix, it was noted that the code for the Meteor Lake-S driver is as of press time, still in development. Aside from that, it was also reportedly being implemented into the Linux kernel.
This comes as a new driver update has just gone live, according to the story by Tom's Hardware. It was reported that the update comes as part of what looks like a dual-pronged desktop CPU lineup.
This is because the Raptor Lake Refresh has long been confirmed as part of the company's next-gen CPUs designed for desktops. As for the code, it notably suggested that the desktop-designed Meteor Lake processors could still arrive not far from now.
New Update Could Come Out Upon the Completion of Linux 6.5
This also gave the notion that there was a possibility that it could co-exist with the new Raptor Lake refresh. As mentioned by Phoronix, the driver code specifically gives the Intel upgrades, like its pin control driver that can now support Meteor Lake S.
While the moves were just recently implemented, it was noted that they would be shipped out upon the completion of Linux 6.5. Phoronix also notes that the brand-new update to the driver would compliment the different Meteor Lake-S code the kernel already uses.
Tom's Hardware suggests that this would confirm that Intel developers are actively working on new Meteor Lake S support. As of press time, it was noted that Intel has not commented on the desktop Meteor Lake-S processors.
The Meteor Lake S and the Raptor Lake CPUs Could Co-Exist
However, it was noted that China themselves were the one that confirmed the Raptor Lake Refresh. Despite that, the Linux updates somehow nullify different rumors regarding the cancellation of a Meteor Lake S.
The article reports that should Intel's new Meteor Lake S still launch soon, in line with the given evidence, the Meteor Lake desktop processors could co-exist with Raptor Lake CPUs within the same market. The Meteor Lake S previously showed up in rumors on articles like WCCFTech.
The Meteor Lake is the 14th Gen Lineup, While the Raptor Lake is the 13th Gen Lineup
This would particularly fill in the gaps in the Intel 14th Gen lineup, which is suited much better for Intel's more advanced architecture, the Meteor Lake. Tom's Hardware also highlights how there wasn't much difference between the Raptor Lake refresh and Meteor Lake.
This was as Raptor Lake is Intel's current 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPU and Meteor Lake, would be the company's new architecture, expected to use new technologies. Regarding new technologies, some of the changes expected include new cores, AI-acceleration, new tiles, and much more.
