Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 is likely to offer water and dust resistance up to IP67 rating, which tablets these days typically miss out on.
A new leak reveals that Samsung is planning to upgrade the water and dust resistance on its next-generation flagship tablet, the rumored Galaxy Tab S9, which is set to debut sometime in 2023.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Likely to Gain Water Resistance Upgrade
According to a report by 9to5 Google, tablets rarely offer any kind of water resistance, unlike mobile phones these days.
Although some tablets do have some protection against water, they usually see the light of day on "rugged" variants rather than in the general flagship release. Samsung previously debuted a rugged tablet, which sports impressive water resistance right off the bat.
But this time, Samsung is reportedly planning to offer water resistance to its upcoming Galaxy Tab S9 series as it debuts this year. It looks like the South Korean tech giant is looking to change the trend for tablets.
Sam Mobile disclosed in its report that the upcoming Galaxy Tab S9 lineup is likely to offer up to IP67 water resistance, giving the device protection from water and dust.
It is worth mentioning that the rugged Galaxy Tab Active 3, which debuted in 2020, offers up to an IP68 rating, as per a news story by Phone Arena. So the new S9 tablet is likely to offer weaker dust and water protection.
Phone Arena notes that the IP68 protection lets Galaxy Tab Active 3 users theoretically dip their device in five-feet-deep fresh water for up to 30 minutes. It sure is quite impressive for a tablet.
On the other hand, the Galaxy Tab S9 is likely getting a lower protection rating that limits the possible depth of water.
IP67 Water Resistance: What Does it Offer?
The potential IP67 rating of Galaxy Tab S9 provides dust protection for an "extended period," while its water resistance only lasts for "short periods."
So it turns out that its dust protection is superior to its power to protect devices from water.
Phone Arena notes that an IP67 rating lets users theoretically put their tablets underwater for up to 1 meter for as long as 30 minutes. So this should protect your devices in accidental situations, wherein they got submerged in the bathtub.
However, do take this with a grain of salt. Samsung has yet to confirm the specs of its upcoming Galaxy Tab S9.
