Tesla Magic Dock Supercharger Begins Testing in the US, Allowing Other EVs to Charge

Here's how the Magic Dock works for non-Tesla EVs.

Tesla's first Supercharger with Magic Dock, which allows non-Tesla electric vehicles (EVs) to top up their batteries, has begun testing in the United States (US).

It has been a while since the Elon Musk-led automaker started opening its Supercharger network for non-Tesla EV owners in Europe. And this time, it has begun doing so in the North American region.

Tesla's First Magic Dock Supercharger Starts Testing in the US

As per a recent report by Electrek, the all-electric car maker has started equipping Magic Docks to one of its Superchargers in the US.

The online news outlet notes that when the Supercharging network in Europe began opening its doors to non-Tesla users, the Musk-owned EV maker says that it will do the same in North America by the end of 2022.

But as we welcomed the new year, the Supercharger network in the US has yet to provide charging services to other car owners.

Electrek highlights that opening up the charging network of Tesla to other electric car brands is a bit more complicated in North America compared to Europe.

In the European region, the Musk-led EV maker already offers a CCS connector, which also supports other car brands.

On the other hand, the US-based Superchargers come with the proprietary connector of Tesla, preventing other EV owners from topping up their batteries. To open up its doors to everyone else, the giant car maker would have to shift to a new connector or adapter.

And now, Tesla has begun testing a way to open up its Supercharger network to the rest of the EV owners in North America.

The EV maker kicked off its project by installing a "Magic Dock" in one of its Supercharger stations in the US.

With that, a Reddit user has spotted a Rivian R1T electric pickup truck charging at the first Tesla Supercharger station equipped with the "Magic Dock."

How Tesla Magic Dock Works

Auto Revolution reports that Tesla has found a way to allow other EV owners to charge their all-electric cars in its Supercharger network across the North American region.

And the solution is none other than the "Magic Dock," which is essentially a double latch adapter that offers a CCS connection.

Non-Tesla EV owners could use the CCS connector provided by the Magic Dock by unlocking it using the Tesla app. By doing so, it should transform the Tesla Supercharger connector into a CCS adapter.
