Because of its efficiency, many countries already use Tesla EVs as part of the police forces. These include Thailand, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.

Now, Canada decided to join them by including the Tesla Model Y in its police car fleet. This was made possible thanks to the efforts made by the Westshore RCMP.

One of these is the popular Tesla Model Y. Of course, some modifications were made to ensure that the EV can efficiently do its job as a police vehicle.

The EV was outfitted with the needed police equipment. The Westshore RCMP had to add a separate battery to make sure that the car's 330-mile range will not be affected.

Due to Model Y's space limitations, authorities were only able to add one prisoner compartment in the back seat.

Aside from this, the police also need to push back other equipment usually installed on the dashboard because of Model Y's in-car display.

Instead of putting them in the dashboard, they will now be placed in the center console.

The Tesla Model Y will not be the only EV in Canada's police car fleet. The Westshore RCMP announced that they are also planning to add the Ford Mustang Mach-E, as well as the F-150 Lightning before 2023 ends.

Benefits of Tesla as Police Car

Recently, Electrek reported that the Tesla Model Y offers many benefits if it is used as a police car.

The police chief of Somerset in Wisconsin claimed that their department decided to add the Model Y to their fleet because of the following reasons:

  • Most are American-made vehicles
  • Highest crash test rating
  • No oil changes
  • Superior performance
  • Long vehicle life
  • Regenerative braking
  • Battery designed for 500,000 miles
  • Drivetrain/motors designed for 1,000,000 miles
  • Five-year/125,000-mile drivetrain and battery warranty

Using these details, the police official estimated that they can save around $80,000 with Tesla Model Y as their police patrol vehicle.
