The Somerset police chief in Wisconsin believes that using a Tesla Model Y in their police department will help them save more than $80,000 for the next 10 years to come.
According to Somerset PD head Joel Trepczyk, there are many benefits of using this particular EV model. Aside from its environmental impact and cheap operating cost, there are a lot of reasons why buying this electric vehicle should be a priority.
Why Somerset PD Chose Tesla Model Y
In an interview with Police 1 News last Friday, Feb. 3, Trepczyk said that the Somerset police department selected Model Y for financial reasons.
On top of that, the chief shared how this specific car is better than the other patrol cars available in the country.
- Long vehicle life
- Superior performance
- Highest crash test rating
- The battery can go for up to 500,000 miles
- 5-year warranty for battery/125,000-mile drivetrain
- American-made EV
- Motors/drivetrain can go for 1,000,000 miles
- No oil changes to be made
- Regenerative braking
Trepczyk says that the police department managed to purchase the Model Y for just $60,000 yet the subsidies have further lessened the initial price.
According to the Somerset PD chief, more than $80,000 will be saved by the department for the next decade. This is all attributed to the benefits of its operation cost.
"The vehicle was purchased using American Rescue Plan Act funds. We also applied for funding from an LEA grant, as well as donations to the purchase. The purchase price of the vehicle was around $60,000. More importantly, it's projected to save our village over $80,000 throughout its 10-year duty cycle," Joel added.

More Police Departments Are Using Tesla Cars
This is not the first time that a police department purchased a Tesla car as a patrol car. The reason why many of them opt to use it is that it's cheaper compared to other patrol vehicles.
In the long run, they won't have to worry about its operation cost although it has a higher sticker price.
In 2021, Tech Times reported that the Westport police department was using Tesla Model 3 as its patrol car during duty.
According to the policemen, it's a money-saving vehicle, thus it has a collision avoidance feature that lessens the chance of crashing.
Before they bought the Tesla Model 3 car, they ran it under several tests to see if it was working or if it had defects that needed to be fixed.
