Minecraft, one of the most popular video games of all time, is getting a major new feature allowing players to customize their in-game armor. The new feature, Armour Trim Smithing, is currently available in the game's most recent PC test build, snapshot 23w04a.
According to Mojang, the new Minecraft feature will allow players to visually customize the game's blocky armor by locating a consumable Smithing Template for the type of customization desired, as well as a smattering of resources to determine the desired color.
Customize Your Minecraft Armor
One of the most notable changes in this update is that Netherite armor will now require a Template to craft. According to Eurogamer, the search for these Smithing Templates is intended to encourage players to explore more of the game's world and dungeons.
Players can find templates for various armor styles in chests in procedurally generated locations such as pillager outposts, desert pyramids, jungle temples, Nether fortresses, and others.
Netherite templates can be found in Bastion Remnant chests, with Mojang designing their rarity as a deliberate change to make their possession a "more significant achievement in the game's progression."
Each template has a 3.2% chance of spawning in a loot chest, so players must search for them. However, once a netherite smithing template is discovered, players can easily duplicate it by placing it on a crafting table with a block of netherrack and seven diamonds.

These armor styles can be colored using various Minecraft items such as iron or diamonds. This allows players to give their characters genuinely unique looks, adding a new layer of depth to the game's already intricate world.
Armor customization, like all new Minecraft features, is only available in the game's latest PC snapshot until it is packaged up and included in a future update that will eventually roll out to all Bedrock platforms.
Players on other platforms, such as consoles and mobile devices, will have to wait a little longer to use the new feature.
Netherite Gear Crafting
According to Sportskeeda, the most recent Java Edition snapshot for Minecraft has also given players a sneak peek at the upcoming changes to netherite armor.
Netherite armor is obtained in the current version of the game by applying netherite ingots to a piece of diamond armor on a smithing table.
However, crafting netherite armor will appear more difficult with the overhaul of smithing tables and the addition of smithing templates in snapshot 23w04a.
Players will now need a netherite upgrade smithing template, diamond gear, and netherite ingots to craft the powerful armor. Adding a smithing template requirement will slow the progression from basic armor types to diamond and then from diamond to netherite.
According to Mojang, the changes to netherite armor were made for a few key reasons. Because most players would upgrade to netherite almost immediately after collecting netherite ingots, the developers wanted to make diamond armor feel more substantial for a more extended period.
