Porsche Releases a Hardware Upgrade for Taycan Models that Reduces Charging Times

This will cost owners $1,850.15 and a 12-hour installment of the module.

After releasing an update for Taycan EVs earlier this year, Porsche released another hardware upgrade, if ever owners were not satisfied with those enhancements. The new onboard charging model cuts Level 2 charging times from almost ten hours to just under five hours.

Reduced Charging Times for Taycan Models

Porsche released a new and more powerful onboard device that doubles the power of Taycan models. In a released statement from their newsroom, the automaker released an AC 19.2 kW on-board charger that doubles the amount of the vehicle's power.

This will cut Level 2 charging times from 9.5 hours to five hours. Performance Battery Plus models can also utilize the new upgrade by refilling their vehicle's battery from zero to full in 4.8 hours.

An additional Plug and Charge capabilities for 2020 models of Taycan and a valid My Porsche account will also be added to the module, which will replace the existing onboard charger and associated wiring included in the car. This feature was only available before for 2021 models.

While all of these upgrades will dramatically improve your vehicle's power, this will cost owners $1,850.15 and a 12-hour installment of the module. Meanwhile, new and potential owners of Taycan models can just simply add higher capacity OBC to their builds, and select the KB4 option instead.

As per Engadget's report, owners can also avail Porsche's new wall charging unit to have the 19.2 kW charging speeds at home for $1,586 (without installation fees). This will require a 100-amp circuit to provide the best possible performance, but the automaker clarified that it can also work with lower-capacity circuits.

Previous Updates

July this year when the automaker also released a comprehensive dealer-installed update to Taycan models. But compared to the recent upgrades, these changes were available for free to 2020-2022 model owners.

The update includes an improved efficiency that increases to 31 miles of range or 50 kilometers on the WLTP cycle, which gave a considerable boost to the 200-mile EPA rating of the vehicle. Through this, the 2020 models will run as efficiently as the 2020 models.

While some of the owners enjoyed this new update through a road test, Engadget reported that some of the owners noticed latency in some operations. This is why Taycan's display-laden infotainment system was also included in the update where the startup and response times were both improved.

Integrations for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay were also included, that would allow both systems to work wirelessly in the vehicle. Without fast chargers, drivers can also now search the navigation system online for filler out stations.

For the 2023 Taycan models, Porsche included a panoramic roof and hard-wiring for the optional Dash Cam system.
