Google is planning to create a new AI feature for its Search engine, one that would rival the recently released and controversial ChatGPT from OpenAI. The company revealed this after a recent Google executive meeting that involved the likes of its CEO Sundar Pichai and AI head, Jeff Dean, that talked about the technology that the internet company already has, soon for development.
Employees from the Mountain View giant were concerned that it was behind the current AI trends to the likes of OpenAI despite already having a similar technology laying around.
Google to Rival OpenAI with AI Chat Bot for 2023
Google executives recently banded together on an "all-hands" meeting (via CNBC), and were collectively asked regarding their take on OpenAI's latest tech, ChatGPT. Its top management claimed that Google will soon deliver an AI feature for its search engine for the public to use, but it would not rush the process of developing the technology.
The internet company wants to take it slow, as it does not want to push a technology that would end up ruining its reputation for the many implications of the dangers of AI.
Jeff Dean regarded that creating AI irresponsibly would result in "reputational risk" for the company, and it plans to be more conservative in its next steps.
On the other hand, CEO Sundar Pichai claimed that there are upcoming AI products to arrive by 2023.
Google: To Create a Responsible AI for Search
According to 9to5 Google, the executives regarded that Google would focus on being bold and responsible for its development of AI, with 2023 to "mark a point of inflection" to the way the public will use AI for conversations and searches.
Employees think that Google "missed an opportunity" in competing with the likes of ChatGPT, as the company already has this technology to compete with OpenAI.
Google and its AI Projects
There are many advancements to AI that the famous internet search company already has, but one of them is a controversial one as its engineer dubbed it as a "sentient" technology. Initially, Google suspended this software engineer, Blake Lemoine, for his remarks against the LaMDA, with the company ultimately deciding to remove him from his post.
The Language Model for Dialogue Applications from Google is one advanced technology, but it has not yet been available to the public in a wide release, already seeing this kind of comment from its employees.
While Google may not deliver its artificial intelligence projects at a chatbot level yet, the company has multiple significant projects which focus on advancement and innovation for its step towards it.
There is a Google AI Chatbot already available for beta testing to the public, and the company recently opened up interested applicants to join via its AI Test Kitchen platform.
Employees fear that Google may be lagging behind the likes of OpenAI for their latest release and massive fame with ChatGPT, but that is not exactly the case. As per its executives, the internet company would like to deliver responsible technology with regard to its AI projects, one that would soon arrive for its search engine features next year.
