Elon Musk, a tech billionaire, was the guest of honor at a Dave Chappelle comedy concert on Sunday night, Dec. 11, when he was received with a mixed reception of boos and applause.
According to CNBC's reporting, this was heard through a video uploaded on Twitter.
That Night
On Sunday at the Chase Center in San Francisco, comedian Dave Chappelle invited Tesla and Twitter CEO Musk up on stage during a special Punchline Comedy Club event.
The audience can be heard booing Musk in a video published on Twitter.
Reportedly, Musk's recent acquisition of the social media platform has drawn criticism owing to worries of mass layoffs and poorly enforced content moderation.
Chappelle told the crowd, "Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world." Although there was some applause from the people, the booing was far louder.
"You weren't expecting this, were you?" Musk told Chappelle after hearing the audience booing.
In response, Chappelle jokingly said that perhaps some people who Musk laid off are in the audience, as well.
In a later part of the video, Chappelle can be heard saying that those booing Musk have lousy seats in the stadium.
Deleted Proof
The Twitter account that uploaded the video has either been suspended or the video has been removed.
When trying to access the video, an error message appears saying, "This Tweet is from an account that no longer exists."
CNBC attempted to reach Twitter for comment but did not respond right away. One reason is perhaps due to the recent laying off of many members of its communications team as part of a broader effort to eliminate approximately half of its employees.
Someone who happened to be present at the Chappelle concert, Twitter user James Yu, claimed that "a good 80% of the stadium boos," while the total population in the stadium is around 18,000.
Yu also said that Chappelle gave him many opportunities to talk, but he placed his hands in his pockets.
"I actually felt bad for him. I'm by no means an Elon fanboy, more [of] a centrist. I wanted to shake him: for the love of god man, say something and pretend it's a tweet!"
Disasterous Move
On Sunday, Musk reportedly angered several people with a tweet in which he attacked Anthony Fauci, the departing US chief medical adviser and the public face of the White House's response to the Covid-19 virus.
The post fueled a firestorm of online hatred and conspiracy theories that had already been hurled at the seasoned immunologist, CNBC reported.
The Tesla CEO has frequently criticized the policy of utilizing lockdowns to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, despite his previous prediction that the Covid pandemic would cease in April 2020.
Musk made fun of the practice of using gendered pronouns in a tweet. The millionaire wrote, "My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci."
Many Twitter users were outraged by the tweet's transphobic sentiments.
Notably, Chappelle's "The Closer" Netflix special has been criticized for transphobic remarks, as well.
