A passenger aboard the Carnival Valor ship reportedly went missing at noon on Thursday, November 24. The 28-year-old man traveled to Cozumel, Mexico, with his sister.

The passenger rode the vessel together with his sister on Wednesday, Nov. 23. The next day, his sister noticed that he did not come back when he went to the restroom.

According to the South China Morning Post, the case was immediately reported to the coastguards, and the rescue team launched a search-and-rescue operation for the missing passenger.

The authorities alerted the passing vessels to inform them if they saw a man in the middle of the gulf. Per Coast Guard Lt. Seth Gross, a cargo ship driver, noticed a man located approximately in the southern part of Southwest Pass in Louisiana.

The footage went viral on Twitter, showing a man who was the missing Carnival cruise ship passenger. He was saved by a helicopter the following day at around 8:25 PM.

In another story by The Guardian, Gross admitted that the search operation became much more difficult because of the time difference.

'Thanksgiving Miracle

Being afloat for several hours in the sea is not only dangerous because of the animals that might get in the way. The victim can also potentially suffer from hypothermia and hydration due to a long stay in the open water.

That's what happened to the passenger, who reportedly experienced shock and mild hypothermia. However, Gross said that the man appeared to be in stable condition despite his experience.

When the man went missing, the Carnival spokesperson immediately issued an order to retrace their path.

"We greatly appreciate the efforts of all, most especially the US coast guard and the mariner who spotted the guest in the water," Carnival said in a statement.

As part of the survivor's privacy, the rescuers did not release the name of the man to the public.

Indeed, it's truly a miracle to see a man alive after enduring several threats in the open water. The fact that he managed to stay afloat is something that's unthinkable.

More importantly, he managed to stabilize his body temperature for several hours, given that the water temperature at night can dramatically reach over 70F or 21C.

As a result, many people believed that this incident was a "Thanksgiving miracle," and the man was very lucky to see a glimpse of tomorrow for another day.
