India may follow suit in the EU's decision to adopt the USB-C charging port in iPhones.More devices have begun adopting the USB-C charging port as a standard. This port is used by almost all Android phones, contemporary laptops, charging cables, and even game controllers. However, Apple continues to oppose the single standard port as the technological community gradually moves toward it.
The corporation insists on using the unique lightning connector when it comes to iPhone models that sell millions of units a year. However, recent development suggests that this may change as Europe has passed down a new law for all devices being sold in their country to use the type-C port.
Now, talks in India suggest that they may follow suit in the idea as the country started manufacturing iPhones through Pegatron.
India May Force Apple to Ditch the Lightning Port
The European Union recently compelled Apple through a new law to adopt USB-C on iPhones offered for sale in the EU.
Following the development, it appears that India is developing a similar law imitating the EU's plan for smartphones. Government representatives are working on a measure to mandate USB-C for all computers, tablets, and cellphones.
According to India Today, Apple may be likely to follow this new rule given that India's population is almost 1.4 billion and one of the biggest consumers of Apple products.
In the Indian government's press release, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution secretary Rohit Kumar Singh revealed a meeting with different government and private agencies regarding the idea.
"During the meeting, a broad consensus emerged among the stakeholders on adoption of USB type -C as a charging port for electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. Further, it was deliberated that a different charging port may be adopted for feature phones." according to Singh.
However, the details of the law in India are still subject to further discussion, according to the released details of the Indian government.
What We Know So Far on the EU's Mandated Charger Law
According to the European Parliament's statement, all cell phones, tablets, and cameras sold in the EU must include a USB Type-C charging port by the end of 2024. Additionally, laptops will also be subject to the requirement by 2026.
The new rule was approved by the plenary with 602 votes in favor as an initiative to minimize e-waste and give consumers more ability to make environmentally friendly decisions.
The new regulations will allow consumers to use a single charger for a wide variety of small and medium-sized portable electronic gadgets,
The law affects all devices that meet the requirements, regardless of their manufacturer, including new mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld videogame consoles, and more.
