Cancellation of #Chirp Developer Conference

Twitter announced through @TwitterDev that the #Chirp Developer Conference is now canceled, just two weeks before the supposed event to happen. No reasons were provided by the team regarding the cancellation as the note only indicates that they are currently building some things that they will release soon.

A spokesperson from Twitter decided not to comment on the cancellation and its reason. This was a surprise knowing that just two weeks before the announcement, members from the media received invitations for Chirp registration.

This was supposed to be a revival after the hiatus of the event that took seven years to come back. "Chirp is the first time we will bring our developer community from around the globe together in person to preview some new tools, discuss feedback, and celebrate the developers that are making it easier for people on Twitter to discover content, have safer conversations, and impact the greater good," a spokesperson from Twitter stated in the invitation.

According to the developer site of the platform, the event was supposed to happen in San Francisco, California, and will be including a keynote, technical sessions, and a chance to meet and greet the team of Twitter Developer Platform where attendees can ask questions and have a connection with existing and notable developers.

Aside from the in-person activities during the event, Twitter also planned to live stream the keynote and post all the sessions online after the event. Community Meetup Groups was also the planned host for the regional events.

Possible Reasons

Despite the event being already heavily planned and all set up to happen two weeks from now, Engadget stated that the cancellation was not a surprise knowing Elon Musk took over and just recently acquired the company. Based on past reports, Mus has been focusing on changing some sectors for Twitter Blue, the subscription service of the platform. Aside from this, he also would like to change how the platform executes content moderation and the other existing policies.

Since Twitter stopped hosting a live developer conference in 2015, the company's relationship with its developers has been rough. Especially when the company made changes to API in 2018 that were described by the report as "deeply unpopular and poorly communicated".

But recently, Twitter made efforts to improve its relationship with the developers as the company presented in 2020 an improved version of its API along with new features for researchers and developers to study the platform.
