Tesla Is Securing Lease of a Massive Building in Illinois, Job Listings Suggest New Key Distribution Center

Tesla signed a lease for nearly 667,000 square feet of space in the area.

Tesla, one of the world's fastest-growing vehicle manufacturers, has been seen building gigafactories around the world to meet the growing demand for self-driving electric vehicles. The Canadian government confirmed in September that it was in talks with Tesla about building a Gigafactory in the country.

With the opening of new Showrooms, Service Centers, and Superchargers all over the world, Tesla has continued to grow rapidly.

Based on an Electrek report, Tesla is looking to open a new factory in Pontoon Beach, Illinois, near St. Louis. This comes on the heels of reports that the company has signed a long-term lease on a massive new building in the area.

A New Tesla Warehouse in Illinois

The company has not yet revealed what the leased property will be used for, but its size suggests that it could be converted into a massive parts distribution center.

A request for comment was not immediately responded to by the company or the developer. Tesla's website did not have any job openings in Southern Illinois to provide further details. But online news outlets have spotted several related job listings currently live on LinkedIn.

While there are no job openings on the Tesla Careers website, many Pontoon Beach-based positions are posted on Linkedin, from "Inventory Control Specialist" to "Material Handler."

All of the job descriptions mention working in a warehouse and being a part of the Distribution & Fulfillment group, with some even mentioning specifically that the successful candidate will work in a "Parts Distribution Warehouse."

Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated in June that the company's Gigafactories are losing billions of dollars in production costs. Musk revealed that Gigafactory Berlin and Texas experienced difficulties in their operations, which is due to the chip shortage that the industry is experiencing at the time.

This appears to be no longer the case, as the EV manufacturer has been on a factory construction spree. Tesla enjoys large structures and has constructed many of them, including Gigafactory Nevada and Gigafactory Texas, among the company's largest structures worldwide.

More About the New Tesla Warehouse

Tesla signed a lease for nearly 667,000 square feet of space at Gateway TradePort, a planned industrial park in Pontoon Beach, according to a local news outlet, Courier Tribune. A market report from commercial real estate firm CBRE confirms this.

According to CBRE, Tesla will soon occupy Building 4 of the development, which accounts for more than half of the 1.1 million total square feet, as reported by DriveTeslaCanada. Building 4 is still under construction, so it is still unclear what Tesla intends to do with the massive space.

The company plans to open a dealership and service center in south St. Louis County, about 27 miles southwest of the Metro East facility, at the same time as the warehouse deal, the report claims. Tesla is also operating a dealership in nearby Chesterfield.
