Twitter Now Tells Users Who Screenshot Tweets to Share Instead

Twitter now knows you are taking screenshots.

Twitter is now nudging its users who take screenshots of tweets to share the post instead.

The social media giant looks to be encouraging its users to directly share tweets than simply posting screenshots of them elsewhere.

Twitter Nudges Users Who Take Screenshots

If you are looking to share a viral tweet, you might have been guilty of taking a screenshot and sending it to your friends.

Not to mention that these popular Twitter posts sometimes end up on other platforms too, such as Instagram and Facebook, as -- you guessed it - screenshots.

But according to a recent report by Android Police, this cross-posting habit lessens the traffic to the original posts. It's not really a new thing as we often see TikTok videos get reposted on Instagram and Facebook Reels.

This time, it looks like Twitter is also trying to discourage cross-posting tweets on the microblogging platform.

As per a news story by Ars Technica, the social media giant appears to be working to encourage its users to use the share button.

A new update on Twitter, which seemingly only shows up to a select number of users, now reminds users to share tweets instead of merely taking a screenshot of them.

Share Tweet Instead?

The well-known social media expert, Matt Navarra, disclosed that the social media platform is now showcasing a prompt when users take screenshots of tweets.

He further notes that there are two options that users can choose: either they go on to "Share Tweet" or decide to "Copy link."

Upon taking a screenshot of a Twitter post, a pop-up will remind users to "Share Tweet instead," which comes with an option to share it directly or copy the link.

The social media analyst says in his recent post that "Twitter doesn't want you to screenshot tweets anymore." He further suggests that the social media giant is now encouraging users to view tweets from the platform instead of merely looking at screenshots.

Ars Technica notes that there seem to be three versions of the new Twitter prompts. One only shows a "Share Tweet" option, while the other version comes with a "Copy link" button. There is also a double-stacked counterpart, which features the two options.

One of the Twitter users replied to the post of Navarra, saying that the prompt does not feature any option to close it. However, it is worth noting that the pop-up vanishes on its own after a few seconds.
