The Apple Watch Series 8 is finally here with a brand-new version of Watch OS, also available for Watch Series 4 or newer owners.
This new version, known as watchOS 9, includes a plethora of innovative, useful fitness and training features that could help improve your fitness workout!
You need to know three features before starting your workout with the new Watch OS.
Advanced Running Dynamics
As reported first by TechRadar, watchOS 9 features sophisticated running dynamics, such as the option to record stride length, vertical oscillation, and ground contact time.
The length of a stride is the distance traveled from the time your right (or left) leg leaves the ground until it strikes it again during the next cycle of your run.
When you run, your vertical oscillation determines how much you move up and down. Typically, the torso is used to capture this to avoid dealing with the additional complexity of arm movement, and Apple is counting all of this on the watch's calculations.
Lastly, the ground contact time indicates the interval between when your foot initially makes contact with the ground and when it fully releases that contact.
Running Power
Running power is a brand-new statistic introduced by watchOS 9, which evaluates your runs in terms of watts. It determines how much work you put in. Your running power will rise if you start jogging up an incline at the same rate, which will lessen as you descend.
This feature can be very useful in managing your level of exertion on longer inclines, something pace alone cannot achieve. It could be used as a substitute for pacing your runs based on your heart rate. After trying both, choose the option that works better for you.
Customize Option for Workout Views
In earlier iterations of watchOS, the user's running metrics were displayed on one page, and five stats could be presented at once.
TechRadar said that mid-exercise is more varied in WatchOS 9. It features options such as heart rate zones, activity rings, running power, elevation displays, and running power.
Apple offers two customizable training panels in addition to the single fitness screen previously available in earlier versions.
Apple goes a step further by allowing you to design your own exercises. Goals can be specified in terms of time or distance, and intersperse efforts can be broken up into cooling periods. You can enable this feature by selecting the three-pip icon in the workout selection screen and choosing "Create Workout."
