HBO Max streaming apps have been facing backlash since its launch; some are unreleased and disappearing content. Now, the release of the long-awaited Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, faced some issues, as reported by The Verge.
Many GOT fans streamed the premiere episode and could watch it without a glitch. However, some said their apps crashed on them, while others reported that the app froze once it got past the pre-show teaser trailer.
Based on Reddit and other platforms, many people having problems streaming the show on the app are using the Amazon Fire TV Platform, most commonly known as the Fire Stick. One user said they were getting a "title not available" error message which the customer service said they would help to figure out.
Another user that experienced an app crash also reached out to customer service and was advised to close the app and restart it to see if it helps, as reported by Deadline.
It remains unclear why the app would have problems. People on the forum tried to help each other by giving solutions. One piece of advice that has seemed successful so far is to create a new profile.
HBO's Chris Willar emailed TheVerge and said, "House of the Dragon is being successfully viewed by millions of HBO Max subscribers this evening. We're aware of a small portion of users attempting to connect via Fire TV devices that are having issues and are in the process of resolving for those impacted users."
Amazon hasn't provided a statement yet about the current issue.
HBO Max App is Getting Replaced
On another note, it may also be a good thing that HBO Max and Discovery Plus will be replaced with a new service in the summer of 2023. The move is to resolve performance and customer issues, specifically those who struggle to stream when tuning in big shows. According to HBO, Discovery Plus comes with a better tech stack, which is why it will be the core of the new service that will combine HBO Max's content and Discovery Plus' content.
HBO is optimistic and hopeful that the new service will be superb. And that there will also be an HBO-Max-focused cancellation spree to accommodate the transition.
The company also insisted that the overall app was good and was greatly supported. However, it's still unclear what the new nape of the app will be with the combined service.
