$15 Promo Code Crashed Grubhub App Due to Overload

The popular of its $15 promo code has caused the Grubhub app to crash. The FREELUNCH code resulted in the app closing down due to the overwhelming number of users trying to use the promo code.

Grubhub Launched 'Free Lunch' Promo in New York City

According to the story by Daily Dot, the promo reportedly received a lot of traction, which resulted to users being unable to order from restaurants. There have also been reports of overwhelming amount of tickets and even cold food.

The "free lunch" promo was announced by Grubhub on Twitter saying they would give "free lunch" from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 17. The promo was available for users in New York City and slashed $15 off from the users' order.

User Says It Only Took Three Minutes for App to Crash

A number of users said that when they tried to use the Grubhub promo code, the app crashed. According to Lee-on Pedahzur on Twitter, it took only three minutes before the app crashed.

Another user reported that she received pop-ups declining her order despite her efforts to order from familiar restaurants. The user said that the incident happened at around 12:15 p.m.

Restaurants Started Turning Off Delivery Service

In a DM to Daily Dot, the twitter user, Tanya Robinson, said that she chose meals from a restaurant and was told that the deliveries could not be made through a pop up message. A weird occurrence then happened as Robinson described that she was then sent a message telling her three other restaurants were "either closed for the day or for a few hours."

A number of restaurants decided to turn Grubhub off due to them being overwhelmed by the demand they received.

Grubhub Listed Restaurants as Open Based on Usual Operating Hours

Robinson said that she realized that Grubhub was most likely listing restaurants as open based on the operating hours they submitted. This is despite the restaurants shutting down delivery. Other users shared how they received unhelpful answers from Grubhub support.

One worker from a participating restaurant said they ended up with 30 orders that were not picked up and ended up cold. They were then bombarded with angry customers due to the whole incident.

Restaurant Said They had 300 Orders

Aside from the answers that were not helpful, users also said that some of them ended up calling the restaurant after long wait times. Another user said that they had to wait for over three hours and, when they called the restaurant, they said that they had more than 300 orders and were overwhelmed.
