CityAirBus NextGen now has its electric motor supplier, thanks to the recent partnership between the European aerospace giant and MAGicALL.
Airbus announced that it now has a supplier for the electric motors of its electric vertical take-off and landing or eVTOL aircraft that goes by the name CityAirBus NextGen.
CityAirBus NextGen Electric Supplier
As per a news story by Aviation Pros, AirBus is partnering with one of the largest electric motor suppliers out there, MAGicALL to power its eVTOL aircraft.
As a result, the prototype of the eVTOL of the giant aerospace firm is featuring the next-gen electric motor of MAGicALL known as the MAGiDRIVE, which has been tailored for the Airbus aircraft.
Airbus has yet to provide details regarding the electric motor of its CityAirbus eVTOL, such as its power requirements.
However, the European aerospace giant disclosed that the electric motor sports a lightweight brushless design, according to a recent report by Flight Global.
On top of that, Airbus further revealed that its electric motor is also featuring the magnetics and power electronics technology of MAGicALL.
To be more specific about it, the aerospace firm said that both the motors and control system of its eVTOL is a "fully integrated air-cooled propulsion unit."
The head of Urban Air Mobility or UAM of Airbus, Joerg Mueller, himself proudly commended the tried and tested experience of its new partner, MAGicALL. He added that it could surely benefit the development of "the electric propulsion system of CityAirbus NextGen."
The Airbus UAM head went on to add that the MAGiDRIVE motor naturally flaunts a low weight and high torque performance. Not to mention that its two notable characteristics, along with its robust design, should help its upcoming eVTOL to be run more efficiently.
Thus, Aviation Pros said in its report that the electric motor of CityAirbus should help it boast better reliability and performance.
Electric Motor Supplier MAGicALL
It is worth noting that MAGicALL is not only touted to be the leading supplier of electric motors. It has also been in the business for nearly two decades, making the California-based firm an expert in both power electronic and custom magnetic innovations for the aerospace world.
On top of that, the recent partnership of MAGicALL and Airbus is not the first rodeo of the two firms to work on something.
In fact, the California-based electric motor supplier has previously worked with Airbus, providing motors to its tilt-wing UAM technology demonstrator that goes by the Vahana.
CityAirBus NextGen
Meanwhile, the first all-electric eVTOL prototype of the Europe-based aerospace firm launched the CityAirbus NextGen way back in Sept. 2021.
This time around, its development appears to be moving forward with its new electric motors supplier.
