"Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2" will be the next mainline entry in the long-running "Call of Duty" series, as it has finally been revealed.
According to GameSpot, MW2 will bring about a "new era" for the iconic first-person shooter franchise. This claim comes straight from Activision Blizzard (as expected), who has been teasing the game for a while before this official announcement. Now, the game has its actual logo, which has been shared on Twitter by user Chaos:
As you can see there, the logo prominently features the letters M and W combined with the Roman numeral II for an obvious hint that this is, indeed, a MW2 game. But that's not all, since eagle-eyed observers also caught the logo of Task Force 141 - one of the most elite combat groups in the entire "Call of Duty" franchise.
But despite the logo reveal, there's still no official release date. Though specific rumors state that the launch is scheduled for Fall 2022, considering how older COD titles released between October and November. As such, it makes sense for this new game to follow.
There's no indication, however, that the new "Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2" is the same game that was thought to be delayed to 2024. As per a report by Tech Times, that delayed game was due to the poor sales of "Vanguard" forcing the head honchos at Activision Blizzard to take a step back.
Either way, a new game has been confirmed for at least this year, or at most by next year. It is also assumed that "Vanguard's" poor sales performance could have spurred this reveal, as per the original GameSpot report. Activision Blizzard might be trying to recoup the money they lost with last year's game - though technically, it was the best-selling game of 2021 (via Tom's Guide).
Long-time COD developer Infinity Ward will be helming this next mainline game once again.
What Is 2022's 'Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2' Going To Be About?
Aside from the logo and the clear indication of Task Force 141 being in the game, there's not a whole lot of details surrounding this year's MW2 as of the moment. What we got now are unconfirmed rumors so far, though they can be pretty interesting if you take a closer look.
- Story: According to Polygon, the game will be a direct sequel to the 2019 "Modern Warfare" reboot. This game was Activision Blizzard's most successful COD title to date. That game ended with the iconic Captain Price creating Task Force 141.
- Platforms: Reliable game industry leaker Tom Henderson has mentioned on Twitter that "Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2" will come to both current-gen and last-gen consoles. That means the PS4, Xbox One, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. However, he did say that it is "believed" this will be the last main COD title to do so, but the move will depend on console market conditions.
By "console market conditions," Henderson means that Activision Blizzard wants to make sure that a good enough number of people would get to play the game. Because if they go full current-gen exclusive early and the stocks of the new consoles remain bad, then so many folks won't be able to play.
