Researchers have come up with a new scientific discovery, saying that quantum computers can be powered by ancient Namibian stones. According to these researchers, the stones can be utilized in order to create special types of quantum computers.
Researchers Find a New Use for Ancient Nambian Stones
Per the story by Geeks UTLD, the research was conducted by some of the most esteemed scientists along with the University of St. Andrews. The collaboration by the University was with scientists coming from the University of Australia, Macquarie University, the Arhus University of Denmark, and even Harvard University.
Although not yet feasible just yet, the scientists and researchers have found that in the near future, the ancient Namibian stones can be used in order to create new light-based computers.
What is a Quantum Computer?
According to Nature, the definition of quantum computing is a certain type of computing capable of performing calculations. The hardware responsible for carrying out quantum computing is often known as quantum computers.
When it comes to quantum computing, superposition, interference, and entanglement are few of its collective properties when it comes to performing the calculations. Although the computers are supposed to be more powerful, the article by Geeks UTLD notes that they are not yet capable of doing the things classical computers are capable of doing.
Quantum Computers and Their Importance in Research and Development
Physicist Paul Benioff initially proposed a model for the Quantum Mechanical back in 1980. Years later, quantum computers are already widely used when it comes to research and development (R&D) especially within the academe.
According to the scientists' discovery, it is possible to create a "special form of light by using ancient Namibian stone" and with the new light, long-held science mysteries can finally be solved by quantum computers.
How the Ancient Namibian Stone was Used
Cuprous oxide gemstone coming from Namibia was naturally mined and used by the researchers in order to produce Rydberg polaritons. The polaritons are considered the "largest hybrid particle of light and matter"
What makes the Rydberg polaritons unique is that they can easily make the switch between either light and matter. Scientists noted that light and matter are "two sides of Rydberg's polaritons" and can interact easily with each other due to the Rydberg's matter side.

Quantum Simulators Created from Interactions Between the Rydberg Polaritons
The interactions made between the two is what creates a special type of quantum computer known as Quantum Simulators. The new unique type of quantum computers make use of the Rydberg polaritons which stem from the ancient Namibian stones.
Although the recent discovery proved it was possible to use the ancient Namibian stones to create a new type of quantum computer, there is still no estimate as to when this will actually and if the new material will ever reach commercial production or use.
